This winter, the Wasatch front has been pummeled with way more snow than Utah has seen in a lot of years. You may have noticed when driving down the freeway, or through town, besides icy conditions, you may have also noticed pot holes. Pot holes will sneak up on you, and may feel alarmed by the sudden thud you hear as your tires roll over it.
Why Do We Have So Many Pot Holes?
As our tires roll over these pot holes, they may feel like craters to the ones riding inside the car. Why do these ugly holes surface on pavement after we’ve experienced winter weather? Well, potholes start as a tiny crack in the road. As water penetrates the cracks and temperatures drop, the water freezes, then expands, causing the crack to widen. As the water within the now widened crack thaws and traffic continues to roll over it smashing the surface and creating pot holes on the surface of the road.
These pot holes are a horrid sight and a jolting experience when encountered and can be a hazard to vehicles. As the snow and cold weather continues, the pot holes we are currently experiencing will only be a drop in the puddle around spring time.
In the Spring, when weather clears up, you can expect to see maintenance workers on the freeways and roads through town, repairing the craters that winter caused. Hopefully this makes you grateful that your car won’t be shaken by another pot hole until the snow comes again.
